President Forwards Fresh Nominations for HRCM

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has forwarded fresh nominations to the Parliament for the vacant membership position at the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).

President Dr Muizzu, on 12 August forwarded his preferred choice for the two member positions on HRCM out of the eligible candidates who applied following the announcement by the President’s Office.

However, during the Parliamentary Human Rights and Gender Committee interview stage, only Mohamed Shafeeg Mamdhooh had managed to clear the minimum 75 percent marks threshold required for it to sign off on appointments to independent institutions. As recommended by the committee, the Parliament the day before had given its greenlight for Shafeeg’s appointment while the other nomination of Mohamed Faris Thoha was rejected.

Following which, the President has forwarded three new nominations to fill the remaining vacancy to the Parliament, including Ahmed Maqsoom, Ameera Naeem and Fathimath Nafath Abdul Wahhab.

The HRCM comprises five members. The current commission members are President Mariyam Muna, Vice President Moomina Waheed, members Aminath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq, Samaau Ahmed Najeeb, and Ismail Habeeb. The two vacancies are open as the terms of Moomina and Shifaath are set to expire next month.
