HDC Launches Coral Restoration Initiative in Hulhumale’

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has launched a coral restoration initiative in the channel park of Phase I of the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale’.

The initiative was launched on Tuesday by HDC in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI).

Divided into phases, the initiative dubbed the ‘Coral Garden Project’, more corals will be planted in the Channel Park during the coming year.

HDC said the purpose of the initiative is to revive a variety of marine life in the area while increasing the corporation's community engagement.

“The aim is to create an underwater garden by creating a habitat for diverse marine life,” HDC’s Managing Director Mohamed Mauroof Jameel said.

HDC teams are aiming to restore the coral ecosystems in the Channel Park, with MARRS frames placed to monitor their growth, health and survival.
