President Muizzu Urges Youth Investment in Wake of Demographic Forecast

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for significant national investment in the Maldives’ youth, describing them as essential to building the country’s resilience amid mounting demographic challenges.

Delivering remarks to commemorate World Population Day, the president highlighted his administration’s commitment to creating conditions that support younger generations. Among the policy priorities are flexible employment arrangements, expanded childcare services, accelerated housing initiatives, and strengthened access to healthcare and education.

His message highlighted a broader focus on equipping youth with the ability to make informed decisions. That includes enhancing reproductive health services, ensuring professional counselling, and tailoring healthcare provision to meet the evolving needs of young citizens. “We will continue to invest in expanding access to reproductive healthcare, improve the quality of education, provide adequate housing and protect the overall social and economic wellbeing of every Maldivian,” the president stated in a post to social media.

The government’s demographic strategy, he noted, must be forward-looking. President Muizzu proposed a comprehensive population policy designed to address present realities while preparing for shifts in age distribution. He described such planning as crucial for managing the long-term economic and social effects of an ageing society.

Backing the call with data, the president cited recent projections that one-fifth of Maldivians will be aged 65 or older by 2062. Preparing today’s youth to navigate that future, he said, remains a central objective of the government’s agenda. “In light of this, this administration remains dedicated to shaping a future where the youth are equipped to embrace both the opportunities and challenges presented by an aging society,” the president said.

Observed globally on 11 July, World Population Day serves as a reminder of the choices countries face in responding to demographic trends and the importance of inclusive, sustainable development.
