President Muizzu Announces Designated Islands for Halal Tourism Development

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government will designate several islands exclusively for the development of halal tourism. The announcement was made via a post on his official X account.

In his post, the President said the Maldives’ tourism industry is one that is renowned across the world. He said it remains a model for sustainability, visitor experience and hospitality, and stated that the Maldives aims to be a leader and a benchmark in Halal Tourism.

The President announced that the government will be designating several islands exclusively for the development of Halal tourism, which will be accompanied by substantial incentives for investors, aiming to diversify and enhance the Maldives’ tourism offerings. He added that the Ministry of Tourism and Environment will unveil further details of the plan in the coming week. The President reaffirmed that the Maldives remains open to investment and welcomes investors from around the world.

While the government has launched a campaign to develop halal tourism in the Maldives, it is also pursuing the development of other segments of tourism such as high-end tourism. This includes efforts to promote local tourism, sports and entertainment and various other markets.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, over 1.74 million tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year. While the government aims to attract 2.3 million tourists this year, the government has also set its sights on increasing tourism revenue to US$ 6 billion by 2027.
