President Muizzu Reaffirms Women's Central Role in Shaping Diplomacy and Global Peace

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed the essential role of women in shaping foreign policy, describing their contributions as integral to international relations and enduring peace. His comments, shared in observance of the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, highlighted the importance of inclusive representation in global decision-making.

In a social media statement marking the occasion, President Muizzu reflected on the Maldives' leadership in championing women's participation in diplomacy. "It is with utmost pride that the Maldives commemorate this day, as one of the Member States of the UN that spearheaded this movement into fruition," he stated.

The International Day of Women in Diplomacy, commemorated annually on 24 June, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2022 under Resolution 76/269. The 2025 observance carries the theme "Eliminating structural barriers to women's leadership in diplomacy", a call that underscores the need for institutional reform and greater gender parity in foreign policy leadership.

President Muizzu reiterated his administration's commitment to expanding opportunities for women in decision-making roles. "The Maldives will continue to commit and act as a firm believer in women leading and shaping a future where women and girls are represented, respected, heard and celebrated as drivers of global peace and progress," he affirmed.

Designated during the 76th session of the General Assembly, the annual observance aims to advance gender equality in diplomacy and formally recognise the significant contributions women make to national development and international cooperation.
