NSPA Disbursed Over USD 3 Million in Disability Allowance in May

The government had disbursed around USD 3.3 million in disability allowance in May, the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) figures have shown.

According to NSPA, 14,144 people had received a combined USD 3.3 million in disability allowance in May this year.

There are 14,308 people on the NSPA register of persons with disabilities. This includes 4,700 children under the age of 18 while 156 new people had been registered, according to NSPA.

Introduced in 2011, the then government in 2023 had raised the monthly disability allowance from USD 129 to USD 195.

The incumbent government meanwhile, is working to complete the "National Register of Persons with Disabilities" to gather essential information for providing necessary assistance.

This initiative aims to ensure that people with disabilities can fully participate in society and access basic services, addressing the need for accurate data to support them effectively.

A recent government programme highlighted key issues, particularly the lack of suitable employment opportunities for people with disabilities. To address this, the government is working with various institutions to match individuals with appropriate jobs and provide skill development programs, including internships.

Additionally, there are concerns about limited educational opportunities for children with disabilities. In response, the government is strengthening efforts to ensure inclusive and sustainable education for all children, regardless of their abilities.

The government is also focused on protecting the rights of people with disabilities through legislation and creating a supportive working environment.
