Agriculture Minister Visits Northern Atolls to Boost Food Security and Farming

Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Maryam Mariya has travelled to Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu Atolls to explore opportunities for expanding the agriculture sector and enhancing food security.

The visit entails visiting islands of both atolls and engaging with the island councils.

During her visit to the Haa Alifu Atoll, the Minister visited Uligam and Kelaa, where met with the respective island councils. During the meetings, the councils noted the need for technical trainings programmes and soft loan schemes for farmers. They also shared information on the key challenges faced by farmers.

During the meeting with the Kelaa Council, the Minister discussed a project to ensure food security on the island. She also visited Maafahi, a hub of agricultural activity in the atoll, and inspected the greenhouses and laboratories and inquired about ongoing agricultural initiatives and techniques.

Of the islands of Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Minister Mariya has so far visited Hanimaadhoo, where she discussed opportunities for food security in the island as well as challenges faced. As part of the visit, she donated 50 breadfruit plants to council under the government’s national food security programme.

The Ministry is working with island councils and other relevant agencies to increase food security in the Maldives in line with government policies.

The Ministry also earlier initiated efforts to identify opportunities to expand the Maldives’ agricultural industry in collaboration with resorts. As part of the initiative, the Agriculture Minister visited resorts practising tree planting and sustainable farming, including vegetable cultivation. The Ministry said the resorts have adopted sustainable farming practices and innovative food production practices.
