The parliament has ratified the appointments of two ambassadors to serve concurrently as non-resident envoys, reinforcing the nation's diplomatic engagement across Europe. The decision confers expanded responsibilities upon Iruthisham Adam, the High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, who will now represent the Maldives in Ireland as the non-resident ambassador. Geela Ali, serving as ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, has likewise been accredited as non-resident ambassador to Ukraine.
Earlier this month, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu submitted the nominations to parliament, as mandated under the Constitution, which requires legislative consent for all ambassadorial appointments, including those of non-resident envoys. Such dual postings are typically conferred upon diplomats already serving in ambassadorial capacities abroad.
Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee undertook the formal vetting process, reviewing the credentials of both nominees. In its report to the chamber, the committee affirmed that Ambassadors Iruthisham and Geela were suitably qualified to assume the additional roles. The committee's findings were presented during a plenary session, where members voted without dissent to confirm the appointments.
