Commissioner of Police Pledges to Prioritise Public Trust and Transparency

Newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Ismail Naveen, has pledged to prioritise maintaining public trust in the Maldives Police Service. The Commissioner made the remarks in an interview with the state broadcaster, PSM News, following his formal appointment as Commissioner of Police.

Expressing his views on the police service, Commissioner Naveen said that even during his tenure as Acting Commissioner, his top priority was upholding the confidence of the people in the police. He noted that the Maldives Police Service is identifying the concerns of the people and working to address them.

The Commissioner noted that one of the key complaints raised by the public is the lack of timely updates on cases reported to the police. He assured that the issue will be addressed, and vowed to strengthen investigations and ensure greater transparency.

"It is very important that the public are kept informed about the investigations. The current challenges include the complexity of our investigative process. Reshaping our investigations is an ongoing challenge. In order to address this, we are already training, retraining and building the skills of supervisors,” he said.

Commissioner Naveen said he is also working to strengthen the fulfilment of the police’s legal responsibilities. He noted that he would give priority to further strengthening existing initiatives rather than launching new initiatives to strengthen the relationship between the people and the police. He also stated the Neighbourhood Police as a successful initiative, and expressed his commitment to strengthening the programme in the future. Additionally, he said he would work to strengthen the relationship with the public through technology and maintain their trust.
