Dr Aishath Shiham, Minister of Social and Family Development, has reaffirmed the administration's commitment to a comprehensive nationwide initiative aimed at evaluating the living conditions and diverse demographics of citizens across the country. In an interview with PSM News, she outlined her ministry's approach to refining social welfare policies through direct engagement and data-driven decisions.
Teams from the ministry are visiting communities across the country, gathering vital information on vulnerable populations, including individuals with disabilities and the elderly. These visits, she said, are shaping policies aimed at addressing specific social challenges and improving access to essential services.
One of the primary initiatives driving this outreach is 'Haalu Kiheneh?', a programme designed to connect directly with citizens and provide tailored support. Minister Aishath Shiham affirmed that the programme reflects President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's broader vision of fostering an inclusive and compassionate society.
Since its launch, Haalu Kiheneh? has reached more than 14,000 households, covering all but four atolls. The ministry expects full nationwide implementation by the end of the year. Visits so far, according to the minister, have helped identify pressing issues affecting communities, allowing officials to implement targeted solutions.
Recognising the unique needs of the elderly, the ministry introduced a specialised programme last month to support bedridden individuals in their homes. The initiative, developed under President Muizzu's directives, focuses on improving both their psychological and physical well-being through personalised care and assistance.
Another programme, 'Ibama', strengthens social protection efforts by establishing local support networks that work alongside institutions to coordinate assistance. Minister Aishath Shiham credited island-based organisations and non-governmental organizations with playing a crucial role in supporting those in need, reinforcing the importance of community collaboration in sustaining effective social welfare.
As these efforts expand, Minister Aishath Shiham reaffirmed that the social and family development ministry remains focused on advancing its mission, ensuring equitable support for all citizens and strengthening the social fabric of the country.
