The Maldives High Commission in Sri Lanka is planning a grand celebration to mark 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, High Commissioner of Maldives to Sri Lanka, Masood Imad has revealed.
Neighboring Sri Lanka is frequented by Maldivians for tourism, healthcare and education. Sri Lanka is also home to a large population of Maldivians.
Sri Lanka was one of the first countries to officially establish diplomatic relations with the Maldives after the island nation gained full independence from the British.
In an exclusive interview with PSM News, High Commissioner Masood said Maldives and Sri Lanka have long-standing relations and share a rich history in trade and other areas. Masood said the High Commission is planning a double celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties with Sri Lanka along with Maldives’ 60th anniversary of independence.
The celebrations are being organised in collaboration with Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka, he said, adding that the events will symbolise the importance of relations.
Sri Lankan government officials and diplomats will be invited to join the celebrations, he added.
Masood said the High Commission and the Maldivian Cultural Center are working together to boost community ties among the Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka.
