President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim on Sunday met some of the country’s top sports personalities, and medal winners.
During the meeting held at Muleeaage Sunday afternoon, the President stated that his administration believes that sports activities plays a very essential role in the nurture and upbringing of the youth population. He also stated that the administration is working on providing remuneration to athletes and sports personalities in Maldives.

President Yameen also said that the administration has enhanced the budget of Ministry of Youth and Sports to further cater the industry and encouraged the athletes to work harder and win gold medals in upcoming sports festivals.
The first couple met with, and congratulated, the Maldives Men’s National Basketball Team, who won the silver medal at the SABA zone qualification round of the FIBA Asia challenge 2016; the Maldives Women’s National Basketball Team, who won the bronze medal at the 1st SABA Women’s championship; the Maldives Junior National Table-Tennis Team who won the silver and bronze medals at the South Asian Junior Championship and Maldivian Flyboarder Ibrahim Hussain, who won 3rd place at the Championnat Europe de Flyboard A Cavalaire June 2016.
