President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has instructed the relevant authorities to conduct a “serious” probe to determine the cause behind the citywide blackout on Sunday.
State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) had said a technical fault had caused the power outage in the greater Male’region including Male’, Hulhumale’ and the airport island Hulhule’ on Sunday afternoon causing major disruptions across the city.
Government and private offices closed early while the afternoon sessions in schools across the capital were cancelled.
Essential services, especially hospitals and the Velana International Airport (VIA) remained on emergency power.
President Dr Muizzu who is currently in Saudi Arabia undertaking the Hajj pilgrimage, in a post on his social media platforms said he had instructed the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough probe into the power outage and to take necessary measures against such a major blackout in the future.
Power has been restored to most parts of the city according to STELCO, after nearly three hours of outage.
