As rising ocean temperatures and human activity continue to accelerate the deterioration of marine ecosystems, the Marine Discovery Centre (MDC) at Four Seasons Resort Landaa Giraavaru is spearheading efforts to counter these environmental threats. Established through a partnership between Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and Reefscapers Pvt. Ltd., the centre functions not merely as a resort feature but as a dedicated institution committed to marine research, conservation, and education.
The Maldives' coral reefs, integral to marine biodiversity yet increasingly vulnerable to climate change and tourism-related pressures, are central to the MDC's conservation initiatives. Among its flagship efforts is the Reefscaping Project, a programme designed to restore damaged reef systems through coral propagation.
Marie Saleem, director and co-founder of Reefscapers, outlined the methodology to PSM News, explaining that small fragments are harvested from healthy corals and cultivated under optimal conditions to encourage regrowth. The strategic placement of these corals is critical to their survival. "The way we do this is by creating iron structures... structures we designed. Small coral fragments are attached to them, and within a year or two, they will become large coral colonies," Saleem said.
Beyond coral regeneration, the centre has broadened its scope to include efforts aimed at protecting vulnerable marine species. The Turtle Clinic, the first facility of its kind in the country, serves as a vital rehabilitation centre for injured and ill turtles. Conservationists at the clinic not only facilitate the recovery and release of these animals but also conduct research to inform long-term preservation strategies.
Efforts to sustain marine biodiversity extend further. The Fish Lab Project, a research-focused initiative, is dedicated to studying marine fish species, examining behavioural trends and ecological interactions. In addition to scientific inquiry, the programme is strengthening local biodiversity through the propagation of key reef fish species such as grouper and snapper.
The Marine Discovery Centre's contributions to scientific research, conservation projects, and public education represent meaningful strides toward safeguarding the Maldives' delicate marine environment. Through its collaborative approach and commitment to innovation, the institution remains at the forefront of efforts to protect the region's rich oceanic biodiversity for generations to come.
