Economic Minister Reaffirms Pledge to Develop Commercial Ports Nationwide

Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the development of commercial ports across the Maldives. He made the remarks while addressing at a ceremony held to sign an agreement with Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) for further development of Kulhudhuffushi City Commercial Port.

The Minister said in alignment with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge, significant technical work are being undertaken to expand the Kulhudhuffushi commercial port as promised. Discussions were also held with various parties on how to maximise the commercial benefits of the port, he said.

The Minister further noted that MPL has a vision of establishing a logistics network in line with the government's policies. While an agreement has already been signed for the development of a commercial port in Kudahuvadhoo, Dhaalu Atoll, discussions are also underway on redeveloping Maamigili, Alif Dhaalu Atoll’s port, as well as plans on further developing the existing ports in Laamu Atoll and Seenu Atoll, he said.

“God willing, the development of the Kulhudhuffushi Port will progress swiftly. Once the agreements are finalised, the next step is to work on these projects,” the Minister said.

The Kulhudhuffushi CIty Commercial Harbour is being developed as a specialised logistical hub which will provide services for islands in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, and Noonu Atolls. The project, which is being implemented in phases, will increase the capacity of the harbour, modernise cargo handling systems and improve storage facilities for both general and perishable goods such as fruits and vegetables.

The government notes that the awarding of the Kulhudhuffushi City Commercial Port Expansion Project to MPL is a major step towards establishing a scheduled cargo handling network from the north to the south of the Maldives. The project aims to improve supply chain efficiency, reduce import costs, and eventually lower consumer prices. Additionally, it is expected to open new economic opportunities, the government said.

This project demonstrates the government's emphasis on implementing infrastructure development in phases, decentralise economic activity, and build a more sustainable future.
