A workshop was held on Monday on Island Waste Management Planning as part of the “Saafu Raajje National Seminar”. The first national seminar on waste management continued for a second day on Monday. This is the first national seminar held on waste management.
The second day of the seminar, held Monday, began with presentations by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), and on the Waste Management Planning guideline. It was followed by a workshop on Island Waste Management Planning. The Environment Ministry sees the Waste Management Planning guideline as a comprehensive tool for Island Waste Management Planning.

Other sessions held today included sessions on Monitoring, Reporting, Data Collection and Statistics, and 3R and Resources Efficiency, which was facilitated by the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD). A session on Financing Organisations for Waste Management was also held today, and it was facilitated by Maldives Finance Leasing Corporation (MFLC), in addition to presentations on construction waste. The second day of the seminar also saw meetings focused on formulating Regional Waste Management Planning.

256 participants from all the islands, councils, NGOs and government institutions are participating in the seminar. The Environment Ministry said that by the end of the 3-day seminar, they would have deliberated on issues facing individual islands in managing waste, and ways to solve these issues and implementation of regional waste management system.
