Abdul Raheem Abdulla, the Speaker of Parliament, has called for strengthened global collaboration and consultation as essential tools to address mounting global challenges and achieve lasting peace. Speaking at the 4th Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Parliamentary Network, held on the sidelines of the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Speaker Abdulla reaffirmed the Maldives' unwavering commitment to the foundational principles of Bandung.
This year's conference commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Bandung Spirit, focusing on the theme "Commemorating 70 Years of the Bandung Spirit: The Role of Parliaments in Upholding the Bandung Principles." The forum highlighted the enduring significance of independence, sovereignty, and international cooperation as guiding values for parliamentary action. Citing this, Speaker Abdulla underscored the need for renewed efforts to champion these ideals and promote non-interference, peaceful dispute resolution, and cultural and trade collaboration.
Speaker Abdulla's address also highlighted the acute challenges faced by small island developing states, drawing attention to climate change as a direct and escalating threat to nations like the Maldives. He appealed to member states for collective action, advocating for environmental justice to support those disproportionately affected by the crisis.
The speaker connected global concerns to domestic progress, outlining legislative measures undertaken by the parliament to advance inclusive development. He cited social security reforms and the Decentralisation Act as pivotal achievements in empowering communities and promoting equity. Speaker Abdulla also commended the strategic oversight of parliamentary committees in aligning governmental actions with national policy, singling out the Committee on National Development and Heritage and the Committee on Human Rights and Gender for their impactful contributions.
Closing his remarks, Speaker Abdulla called for unity among NAM member states, highlighting the shared responsibility to uphold peace, independence, and justice in navigating the complexities of an evolving world.
