The Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has commenced water and sewerage projects in nine islands under the policy to ensure clean water and safe sewerage across the Maldives.
Ensuring water security remains one of the MWSC’s most important objectives. In addition to the MWSC's main water production center in the Greater Male’ area, two water production centers have been established in two other areas of Male’, decentralising its operations.
MWSC’s Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed stated that the company is undertaking projects in several islands under the government’s policy to ensure access to clean water and safe sewerage for the entire Maldivian population. Of the water and sewerage projects awarded to the company by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, work is already underway in nine islands, he confirmed.
Matheen explained that excavators required to for water service establishment in Miladhoo and Magoodhoo of Noonu Atoll, as well as Noomaraa and Bilehfehi of Shaviyani Atoll have been sent to the islands. MWSC stagg have also begun clearing sites for Reverse Osmosis (RO) buildings in these islands. Additionally, the survey work for water connection to households in Noomaraa has already been scheduled, while water meter assembling has also commences in Bilehfahi and Miladhoo, he stated.
Further progress includes the delivery of equipment needed for the establishment of water service in Magoodhoo, Noonu Atoll, survey work for water meters connection to households, ands installing water meters in households, said Matheen. An excavator needed to start work in Kudarikilu of Baa Atoll has also been delivered to the island and MWSC employees have arrived on-site to begin work on the RO building.
Meanwhile, the equipment needed to resume the water project in Fenfushi, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll has also been delivered to the island, with the RO site too being cleared. Equipment has also been delivered to Dhiyamigili of Thaa Atoll, along with site clearance for the RO building. MWSC has also made the final preparations to commence work in Madifushi, Thaa Atoll.
The government has pledged to resolve all challenges affecting water and sewerage projects in different parts of the country, ensuring that halted projects resume and are completed under full government oversight.
