President Dr Mohamed Muizzu celebrated the Maldives Police Service's (MPS) 92nd anniversary, highlighting its pivotal role in delivering its national duties during nearly a century of dedicated service. In a message shared through his official X account, the president extended heartfelt gratitude to police officers and their families, noting the profound impact of their dedication.
In his post, President Dr Muizzu commended the MPS for their unwavering professionalism and steadfast dedication to maintaining national security and public order. He extended his warm regards to the officers and their families, expressing gratitude for their indispensable contributions to the nation's stability and welfare.
Under the administration of President Dr Muizzu, substantial advancements are underway to strengthen and expand policing services across the country, embodying a transformative approach to law enforcement. Since assuming office, the administration has extended police presence to 28 islands, and on 27 March, contracts were awarded for the construction of additional police stations and posts.
The President's Office further disclosed that agreements have been signed to establish police facilities across 83 islands. These initiatives are being spearheaded by state-owned corporations, including the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the Road Development Corporation (RDC), and Fenaka Corporation Limited.
Beyond infrastructure development, the administration has underscored the significance of investing in the professional growth of police personnel, as detailed in the statement. This initiative aligns with the overarching vision of cultivating a modernised and resilient framework for law enforcement. The statement further highlighted an array of efforts to enhance the technical capabilities and academic credentials of officers, as well as to fortify resources that support operational effectiveness.
The MPS, with a distinguished legacy spanning 92 years, embodies both historical significance and a vision for the future. Established in 1933 under the reign of Sultan Mohamed Shamsuddin III, following the ratification of the country's first written Constitution in 1932, the institution has undergone transformative reforms over the decades. Among the most pivotal was its transition into a civil institution in 2004—a landmark development that laid the foundation for progressive legislative and structural advancements.
The anniversary celebrations commenced with a midnight flag-hoisting ceremony, a poignant tribute to the enduring legacy of the MPS. Against this ceremonial backdrop, the administration reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to fortifying police resources, advancing comprehensive training programmes, and bolstering institutional capacity.
