The Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has emphasised the significance of expanding local tourism in the northern Maldives to support the development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport. He made the statement while speaking at a ceremony held at Filladhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll, to introduce the Bank of Maldives (BML)’s Guesthouse Financing scheme, which is specifically designed to support local tourism in the atoll.
In his remarks, the Minister said BML’s newly introduced loan scheme for Haa Alifu Atoll will help boost local tourism in the area, and underscored the importance of enhancing tourism opportunities to support regional growth.
The Minister also stressed the necessity of having a sufficient number of tourist beds available in the region by the time the Hanimaadhoo International Airport reaches completion.
“The Hanimaadhoo International Airport will be completed soon. In addition to resorts, local tourism must be expanded in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani Atolls, as more tourism beds are essential to ensure that the airport viable,” he said.
The Minister noted the government gives special priority to expand local tourism across the Maldives. While BML’s guesthouse financing scheme will be introduced nationwide, the Minister described it as a golden opportunity for businesses seeking to expand their businesses, and urged them to take advantage of the opportunity.
