President Dr Muizzu: 'Our Commitment to Addressing Climate Vulnerabilities Is Unwavering'

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives' unwavering commitment to addressing vulnerabilities intensified by climate change. In a statement shared via social media on the occasion of World Water Day, the president underscored the nation's prioritisation of sustainable access to clean water, a lifeline critical to both survival and climate resilience in the low-lying island nation.

World Water Day, observed each year on 22 March, has long served as an international platform for advocacy on water resource sustainability. This year's theme, 'Glacier Preservation', shines a spotlight on the fundamental role of glaciers in securing global freshwater reserves, maintaining climate stability, and nurturing biodiversity. The theme also amplifies urgent calls to counteract the accelerated retreat of glaciers—a consequence of rising temperatures with direct implications for ecosystems, agriculture, and water security worldwide.

President Dr Muizzu, reflecting on the broader significance of this year's theme, framed it as a compelling call to action against escalating climate challenges. In his message, he highlighted the interconnected nature of water resource management and human vulnerability. "Our commitment to addressing such vulnerabilities is unwavering, as ensuring sustainable access to clean water remains one of our nation's top priorities," he said. The statement also appealed for collective action, urging communities and nations alike to adopt meaningful solutions for a more sustainable future.

The president’s remarks draw attention to the global implications of glacier preservation. Glaciers, which hold nearly 70 percent of the Earth's freshwater, function as natural reservoirs, steadily supplying water to rivers and lakes. Their decline threatens the stability of ecosystems and the reliability of water supplies for billions. Recognising these risks, the United Nations has consistently underscored the need for concerted global efforts, from reducing carbon emissions to innovating conservation practices, to safeguard these vital formations.

Established by the U.N. in 1993, World Water Day aims to focus international attention on the global water crisis. Its objectives align with 'Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation for All', fostering action towards universal and equitable access to water resources.
