President Dr Muizzu Pledges United Efforts for Inclusive Care on World Down Syndrome Day

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the government's unwavering commitment to promoting inclusivity and providing specialised support for individuals with special needs and their families. Posting to social media on the occasion of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), the president underscored the crucial role of collaboration between the government and society in ensuring care for those requiring medical attention.

Marked annually on 21 March, World Down Syndrome Day serves as a vital platform to raise awareness about Down syndrome and advocate for inclusivity and equality. The 2025 theme, 'Improve Our Support Systems', shifts attention to advancing educational, healthcare, and workplace inclusion while strengthening networks of community and carer support. These efforts aim to empower individuals with Down syndrome to live lives of autonomy, dignity, and opportunity.

In his message, President Dr Muizzu commended the empathy and solidarity exemplified by Maldivians, reaffirming the nation's commitment to supporting individuals with special needs and their families. He underscored the critical role of collaborative efforts between the government and the public in ensuring comprehensive care, particularly for those requiring medical attention.

Down syndrome, a genetic condition characterised by the presence of an additional 21st chromosome, affects both cognitive and physical development. These impacts pose unique challenges, particularly in communication and social interaction, making inclusivity and strong support systems indispensable. The condition transcends geographic and cultural boundaries.

The establishment of World Down Syndrome Day by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011 marked a significant step towards global recognition. Since its first observance in 2012, the day has been commemorated with events and initiatives coordinated by governments, international organisations, and civil society groups to drive awareness and advocacy.
