The new fishermen membership register will offer much needed social protection for local fishermen, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam said Tuesday.
Speaking to PSM News Minister Shiyam, who is part of the delegation accompanying President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on his tour of several islands of Dhaalu Atoll, said the compilation of the national fishermen register is nearing completion.
He urged all local fishermen to seize this opportunity as the register will open up a whole lot of benefits for them.
The Minister pointed out that fishermen are currently ineligible for most financial products offered by financial institutions as their income lacks official verification.
However, Minister Shiyam assured that the government will put in every effort to afford the same opportunities for local fishermen as most white collar sectors.
"We are making arrangements to make the income verification process easier so that fishermen's verification or loan can be approved easily. Hopefully, that will be a very happy day for the families of fishermen,” Minister Shiyam said.
The government has launched several efforts to address the long standing concerns of local fishermen.
President Dr Muizzu recently revealed his wish to see fishermen receive Ramadan allowance similar to other sectors. He assured fishermen that this Administration will work towards making it a reality.
