President Reiterates Philosophy to Govern According to People’s Wishes

The government's philosophy is to listen to the people, shape policies and govern accordingly, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said Monday.

Speaking to residents of Bandidhoo, as part of his ongoing tour of several islands of Dhaalu Atoll, the President assured that the government will give special priority to the development of the island.

President Dr Muizzu said his Administration will support the development of various industries, especially fisheries. The ice plant established in Bandidhoo will benefit the fishing industry and the work will be completed swiftly, he assured.

The President said the expectations and needs of the people are clearer after spending time with the people directly, adding that the philosophy of his Administration is to continue to listen and govern according to the will of the people.

The President also addressed the island's pressing space constraints. He called on the Island Council to revise their land use plan, particularly focusing on the relocation of hazardous facilities such as fibre workshops and waste management sites away from residential areas.

President Dr Muizzu pledged to support the implementation of these changes once the Council completes their review.

Responding to requests from local fishermen and vessel owners, the President confirmed that the harbour breakwater will be modified and expanded. He emphasised that this infrastructure investment, while substantial, represents a crucial long-term investment in Bandidhoo's future.

President Meets Community Leaders

Prior to meeting residents, President Dr Muizzu met with the Bandidhoo Island Council, the Women's Development Committee (WDC), and heads of institutions to address the island's important developmental needs.

The Council recognised the problems of erosion and land scarcity on the island and urged for a solution. Additionally, the Council requested that Dh. Kanneiyfaru, which is located near the island, be placed under the island's jurisdiction to facilitate development projects. The Council also called on the Government to address the shortage of facilities and space within the school.

The WDC members emphasised the Government's support for their initiatives; however, they noted a lack of space for them to continue their work, indicating that a solution is necessary.

The President shared an update on the recent work being carried out by the Government through the Cabinet Minister with the Council members, the WDC, and various institutions in their respective areas. He also highlighted the efforts being made to address the concerns raised by the Council.

Prior to the meeting, the President attended the commencement of the Bandidhoo ice plant project and inaugurated the services of the newly established Bank of Maldives (BML) ATM.
