Maldives Calls for Global Unity to Secure Resilient Future for SIDS

Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has emphasised that small island nations like the Maldives can secure a sustainable and resilient future through a united global response. He made the statement in a social media post following his participation in the Sustainable Development Goals in Action 2025 panel discussion, held on the sidelines of the World Government Summit 2025 in the United Arab Emirates.

Speaking at the panel discussion, Minister Thoriq noted the urgency of acting against climate change. While Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) remain at the forefront of climate change, the Minister said despite the many challenges faced, they continue to lead and take bold action against climate change.

The Ministry further said that climate-resilient infrastructure and nature-based solutions are being prioritised in the Maldives. However, it is only with a united global response that a sustainable and resilient future can be secured for island nations like the Maldives, he stressed.

The government has launched efforts to ensure that buildings in the Maldives are constructed to withstand climate-relayed impacts. In this regard, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has developed an instruction booklet for climate change-resistant housing in the Maldives. The guide provides tips for strengthening homes against natural disasters and promoted using environmentally friendly materials to reduce energy consumption.
