Clean Energy Instrumental to Protecting Maldives, says President

Clean energy is instrumental to protecting Maldives and the planet, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu insisted Sunday.

The President made these remarks in a message on X to mark the “International Day of Clean Energy” celebrated on 26 January each year.

In the post, President Muizzu highlighted that Maldives, to lead by example has set an ambitious target to generate 33 percent of its electricity through renewable sources by the year 2028.

The President in an official message, insisted that as a low-lying island nation, acutely vulnerable to climate change, investing in renewable energy sources is a vital commitment for the future of the Maldives.

He also noted that Maldives has made great strides in advancing renewable energy, particularly through solar power initiatives.

“The Energy Act and the roadmap for the energy sector outline the nation's plan to ensure that energy supply is sufficient, reliable, sustainable, secure, and affordable,” President Muizzu said.

According to the President, Maldives’ private sector has demonstrated its commitment through investments in renewable energy adding that such efforts not only contribute to global climate goals but also bolsters the country’s energy security and economic resilience.

Under President Muizzu’s ambitious renewable energy initiative, his Administration has increased the country’s renewable energy capacity from 53 Megawatts to 70 Megawatts in its first year.
