The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has begun distributing dates donated by the government of Saudi Arabia ahead of the Holy month of Ramadan.
Maldives has received the 50 metric tonnes of dates donated by the Kingdom in December last year.
The Ministry said distribution of the dates has begun across the country, and each household will receive one packet.
Households will be identified based on the individual electricity meter number and recipients are required to present their national identity card at the time of the handover, the Ministry said.
According to the Ministry, the dates will be distributed until 6 February. Residents in Male’ can collect the packet of dates between 9.30am and 1.30pm until that date for the Islamic Center.
Local councils have been designated as the distribution center in the rest of the country.
In addition to individual household distributions, a portion of the dates will be allocated to local organisations that plan to hold Iftar programmes during the upcoming Ramadan, the Ministry had said.
