Language Minister Highlights Role of Poetry in Language Development

Poetry plays a pivotal role in the development of a language, the Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim has stated.

Speaking at a ceremony held to mark National Poets’ Day, the Minister noted that this year’s Poets’ Day is being celebrated by various agencies and media outlets. This reflects that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s efforts to restore and uphold nationality in the Maldives are well received, he said.

Noting that poetry plays an important role in the development of a language, Minister Adam Naseer said it also serves as an essential force for national unity and collective action. Throughout history, poetry has played a significant role in motivating the people of the Maldives, especially in cases such as cleaning campaigns, literacy efforts, and even political engagement.

“In the past, poetry played an important role in encouraging people to participate in national clean-up initiatives. It also contributes to fostering a culture of literacy and we continue to see seasonal poetry emerge every five years,” he said.

The ceremony was attended by local poets and individuals who have made contributions to the Dhivehi language and literature.

The National Poets’ Day is celebrated annually on 15 January. This day is celebrated in remembrance of renowned poet, Ibrahim Shihab. This year’s Poets’ Day has been dedicated to esteemed poet and linguist, Abdulla Sodiq.
