President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially inaugurated the newly completed sewerage system of Dhan’gethi, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.
The sewerage system established in Dhan’gethi was funded under a line of credit extended by India’s EXIM Bank as part of a larger initiative to develop water and sewerage systems across 34 islands. The system was developed by India's Kalpataru Projects International Limited.
Dhan’gethi, home to 1,140 residents, is a community thriving on local tourism. Currently, 18 guesthouses are operated on the island, offering 280 tourist beds. While the lack of a reliable sewerage system was a challenge the island’s residents and businesses had struggled with for years, it posed difficulties in daily life and economic activities. However, the establishment of the new sewerage facility has brought significant relief to the community and is expected to boost the island’s economic activities, according to the island’s Council.
