MRI Introduction Marks Start of Ungoofaaru Hospital's Tertiary Upgrade

The introduction of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services at the Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital marks a significant milestone in the administration's ongoing efforts to elevate the hospital’s services to tertiary standards, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has stated.

The Minister made the announcement during a function at Ungoofaaru Hospital, where he officiated the launch of MRI services as the guest of honour. MRI technology uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the body's internal structures.

In his address, The Minister asserted that the introduction of MRI services in Ungoofaaru, Raa Atoll, signals the commencement of the President Dr Mohamed Muizzu administration's broader initiative to elevate the hospital to tertiary status. This marks the first phase of efforts to upgrade Ungoofaaru Hospital to tertiary standards, as per President Dr Muizzu's pledge, he said.

The Minister also underscored the administration's commitment to healthcare sector development, particularly disease prevention. The government is dedicated to implementing and verifying the efficacy of disease prevention measures to protect public health before the onset of illness, he added.

Highlighting the administration’s proactive approach, the Minister noted that efforts to establish primary healthcare services across the nation are already underway. The goal, according to the minister, is to ensure accessibility, increase healthcare awareness, and establish preventive mechanisms on all inhabited islands by the end of 2025.

"We are in the process of establishing primary healthcare services. These services will be implemented on all inhabited islands by the end of 2025. This initiative will significantly enhance our efforts to ensure a healthy community," said the Minister.

In addition to MRI services, the hospital also introduced Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP involves injecting concentrated platelets from a patient's own blood to accelerate the healing of injured tissues and reduce inflammation.

Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital, established 40 years ago, continues to expand its repertoire of advanced healthcare services. Currently, the hospital offers mammography, CT (Computed Tomography) scans, dental care, and ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) services.
