It is the national duty of every citizen to recognise and honour the dedication and hard work of fishermen with the utmost respect, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said. This statement was made in a social media post on the occasion of national Fishermen’s Day, celebrated annually on 10 December.
In his message, President Dr Muizzu extended his felicitations to all fishermen and their families, acknowledging their relentless efforts. He described the work of fishermen as a testament to dedication and hard work, performed in various weather conditions and at all hours, on the high seas.
“Accepting those dedicated and hard-working efforts, wholeheartedly with the utmost respect is the national responsibility of every citizen,” President Dr Muizzu stated.
As the nation observes Fishermen’s Day, the administration of President Dr Muizzu is diligent in its efforts to address the concerns of local fishermen and foster the development of the fishery sector. Among the administration’s notable achievements are efforts to eliminate the backlog of outstanding payments owed to fishermen. In line with President Dr Muizzu’s electoral pledge, the administration has also implemented measures to ensure that fishermen receive payment within 48 hours of selling their catch.
The administration has also initiated a programme to supply fuel to fishermen in the outer islands at the same prices available in the capital, Malé. Recognising fuel as a fundamental necessity, the administration commenced the development of fuel storage facilities on one island in each atoll. To date, facilities have been established on four islands, and the government has begun providing fuel to fishermen at the same rates offered by the State Trading Organization (STO) in Malé.
President Dr Muizzu has also pledged to end government control of the fishery sector, granting fishermen total control of the industry. He also stated that local island councils would be given the opportunity to operate and manage ice plants developed across the country if they wish.
