President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to commence work on the development of an airport in Mathiveri, Alifu Alifu Atoll next year. The announcement was made during his address to the island's residents as part of his ongoing tour of select islands in Alifu Alifu and Kaafu atolls.
In his address, the president reaffirmed his commitment to prioritising the most impactful project for the citizens. While acknowledging challenges posed by this year's budget constraints, he assured that the government would work to fulfill its pledges to the people in its true sense from next year. He added that citizens would witness the commencement and completion of several key projects over the next two years.
Outlining planned initiatives for Mathiveri, the President noted that Alifu Alifu Atoll remains one of the few atolls without an airport. He stressed that the operation of resorts and tourism expansion in the atoll necessitates an airport for added connectivity. While 18 guesthouses are operated in Mathiveri alone, with several under development, an airport in the atoll would bring economic growth and prosperity to the entire area, he noted, expressing his desire to expedite the airport concept's development.
"As a result, more opportunities will be facilitated in the tourism sector for this island and the wider area, bringing in increased economic growth," the President said.
Speaking on other initiatives for Mathiveri, the President said a land reclamation and shore protection project is also in the pipeline. An expansion project for the island's health center is also in the works, with additional services to be offered at the center. The government will also give priority to housing, he added.
