Minister of Social and Family Development Dr. Aishath Shiham has stated that the government is committed to ensuring peace and security for all and fostering a happy, inclusive society. She highlighted various initiatives being implemented to achieve this goal.
Speaking at the Civil Society Symposium organised by the Family Protection Authority (FPA), Dr. Aishath Shiham emphasised that government policies are focused on reducing societal violence and creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. She underscored the importance of identifying family problems early to provide timely assistance and prevent family members from being exposed to harm or violence.
The minister also noted that empowering families is a key priority. She said the government is working to identify families facing conflict, hardship, or situations that threaten the safety and security of their members, ensuring that necessary support is provided.
To assist those in need, the government is running two special programmes. The "Ibama" programme, which focuses on supporting vulnerable individuals and victims of violence, has been established in 37 islands across five atolls this year. A total of 194 stakeholders have been trained under the initiative.
Additionally, the government has launched the "Haalu Belun" programme, which involves ministry-led household visits to collect information and extend assistance. This initiative has been conducted in 53 islands across 12 atolls, with 22 islands completed. A total of 8,027 households, including those in Hulhumalé and Villimalé, have been visited.
The Civil Society Symposium, one of the major events in this year’s 16-day campaign against gender-based violence, was organised by the Family Protection Authority in collaboration with UNICEF. The symposium, held from November 25-26, brings together 15 civil society organisations from across the Maldives to discuss strategies for combating gender-based violence and promoting social harmony.
