The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has announced the list of islands selected for development as urban centres, in line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to establish such centres across every region of the Maldives. This initiative is a key component of President Muizzu’s pledge to promote nationwide development.
The seven islands chosen for urban centre development are Ungoofaaru (Raa Atoll), Eydhafushi (Baa Atoll), Naifaru (Lhaviyani Atoll), Mahibadhoo (Alif Dhaalu Atoll), Nilandhoo (Faafu Atoll), Kudahuvadhoo (Dhaalu Atoll), and Fonadhoo (Laamu Atoll).
The establishment of these urban centres is a significant part of President Muizzu's development agenda, designed to improve living standards and service delivery in the atolls. The centres will be categorized into three tiers, aiming to ensure that citizens in these regions have access to housing and essential services without the need to travel to Malé.
President Muizzu emphasized that the urban centres will provide high-quality services across all sectors in line with the government’s long-term master plan. In support of this initiative, the government has introduced an Urban Development Bill in Parliament.
The President further stated that these urban centres are part of a broader effort to implement major infrastructure projects that will enhance the prosperity of various parts of the country. The development will also offer residents of smaller islands the opportunity to migrate to these urban areas voluntarily, fostering long-term growth and sustainable development across the Maldives.
