Maldives committed to good governance and democracy: Vice President

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has emphasized the Maldives' strong dedication to promoting good governance and enhancing democratic principles. He made the statement during the Executive Session of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024.

During the session, Vice President Latheef highlighted that democracy, human rights, peace, tolerance, and respect for diversity are essential foundations for thriving societies. These values promote understanding and strengthen the rule of law and governance. He pointed out the Maldives' commitment to establishing a solid democratic framework, evidenced by the successful completion of four cycles of free and fair elections—presidential, parliamentary, and local council.

The Vice President also expressed appreciation for the Commonwealth Secretariat's vital role in election observation and suggested enhancing the Commonwealth’s electoral support through training for election officials, creating a comprehensive election cycle plan, expediting observation reports, and providing technical assistance for implementing recommendations from these Observer Groups. He reiterated the government's commitment to collaborating with the Commonwealth to bolster democratic institutions.
