Gov't contracts the development of Thalassemia Hospital to Malaysian company

The government of Maldives has contracted the development of the Thalassemia Hospital, to a Malaysian company, Medo Asia. The government has allocated 17,000 square feet of land in Hulhumale' Phase II, for the construction of a Thalassemia Hospital, aiming to fulfil the pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director of Medo Asia Stuart J Venner Pack and the CEO of Chin Hin Construction Engineering Roger Lim Swee Kiat. Additionally, the agreement was signed with the Managing Director of Sinoma Industry Engineering Liu Tao, to ensure that the hospital is constructed to meet global standards. The agreement was signed during a special ceremony held in Crossroads Maldives, to launch the Thalassemia Prevention and Control Management Masterplan.

The Thalassemia Hospital will be developed and facilitated with the latest technological equipment required to treat Thalassemia patients. It will feature laboratories, wards, private rooms, Intensive Care Units (ICUs), private surgical theatres, along with a dedicated unit for bone marrow transplant.

The government has held discussions with Ooredoo Maldives, to help reduce cost from the government budget by funding for the project, worth USD 6 million. It has also initiated a national campaign this month, aiming to increase public awareness on Thalassemia.

While establishing a hospital specialised to treat Thalassemia patients is a vision of President Dr. Muizzu, he has also revealed plans to provide government benefits to children affected with Thalassemia, from next year onwards.
