Maldives and Pakistan commit to resolving climate change

Maldives and Pakistan have expressed commitment in resolving global issues, particularly climate change and adaptation strategies. The two nations expressed this unwavering commitment during a meeting held between President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79).

The discussions primarily focused on climate change and adaptation strategies, with both President Dr. Muizzu and Pakistan's Prime minister, expressing their dedication to address global challenges, including climate change. The two leaders also encouraged each other to emphasise climate action, during their respective address at the UNGA79. Furthermore, the President shed light on the Five Million Tree Project, initiated by the Maldivian government. He also discussed potential collaboration with Pakistan to support this initiative, proposed during COP28.

Additionally, President Dr. Muizzu and Pakistan's Prime Minister explored potential avenues of mutual interest for collaboration, including commerce, trade, education and tourism. They also discussed on increasing the number of direct flights between the two countries. Pakistan's Prime Minister lauded the Maldives' remarkable progress in the tourism sector, and expressed interest in leveraging the Maldives' expertise to further develop Pakistan's tourism sector.

Concluding the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further enhance and strengthen the diplomatic ties and to advance the strategic cooperation on issues of mutual concerns. The meeting played a pivotal role in reinforcing the strong, brotherly ties between the two nations, with both leaders reiterating their commitment to fostering deeper bilateral relations in the future.
