The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has announced a deadline for individuals with fees and penalties exceeding USD 6,500 to settle their dues, in connection to foreign workers in the Maldives.
The ministry has released a list of 1,026 employers and individuals whose outstanding fees surpass this amount, including some major companies and various industry representatives. The data, sourced from the Xpat system as of July 23, reflects the work permit fees that remain unpaid, with the largest fine amounting to over USD 1.7 million. The total includes more than USD 1.5 million in work permit fees and over USD 129,000 in quota fees. The ministry also said that that failure to make payment by the August 12 deadline will result in a suspension of new permit issuances through the Xpat system.
In a broader effort to address the issue of illegal immigration in the Maldives, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has implemented several measures. These include requiring detailed biometric information from foreigners across all residential, resort, industrial, and agricultural areas. In addition, a regularisation programme will be introduced to integrate illegal immigrants into the legal system, and an Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) programme will be available for individuals wishing to return to their home countries voluntarily.
The Cabinet has also resolved to enhance enforcement measures to tackle illegal immigration. It includes publishing lists of negligent employers, imposing fines for non-compliance, and introducing further actions for repeated offences.
