Government condemns anonymous threats against media outlets

The Government of Maldives has strongly condemned the act of anonymously threatening some media outlets in Maldives on social media and over the phone. These threats, propagated anonymously have sparked widespread concern and prompted swift action from governmental authorities.

In a statement released by the President's Office, assurances were provided to both the public and members of the press that the government stands committed to safeguarding the integrity and freedom of the media. President's Office stated that such acts of intimidation will not be tolerated, and every effort will be made to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The statement revealed that the Maldives Police Service (MPS) has been mobilised to utilize all available resources and capabilities in the investigation of these threats. Citizens were also urged to assist law enforcement by promptly reporting any information regarding instances of intimidation against journalists or media outlets.

Furthermore, the government reiterated its unwavering support for journalists and the media, affirming its commitment to fostering an environment conducive to the free exchange of information. Highlighting the crucial role played by the media in a democratic society, officials pledged to work tirelessly to prevent any attempts at stifling press freedom or compromising national security.
