Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib has assured that there are no concerns regarding the progress of the Thilamale' Bridge project undertaken by the Indian-based Afcons Infrastructure Limited.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had previously inspected the site to assess the progress of the project and expressed his concern about the slow pace. He emphasised the government's commitment to accelerating the project and mentioned ongoing consultations with the contracted company. He also urged the Indian government to ensure the completion of the bridge by 2025.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister Muththalib explained that the project's deadline had been extended by the previous administration, contributing to the slower progress. He, however, said that the government is now content with the construction speed. He highlighted that the contractor is slightly ahead of schedule, with 50% of the bridge pillars already completed and some piers in place.
Thilamale’ Bridge is being developed under the Greater Male’ Connectivity Project (GMCP). The GMCP is the single-largest infrastructure project in the Maldives and is funded through a USD400 million Line of Credit from the Indian Exim Bank and by a USD100 million grant from the government of India.
The project was commissioned in August 2022. It consists of three bridges, a causeway, and a road network spanning over 6.7km. It will also see the development of interchange points and parking zones at each connection stop.
