Vice President urges to continue ongoing public cleanliness for mosquito control

Vice President Hussain Latheef has called on the public to persist in their cleanliness efforts without interruption to curb the spread of mosquitoes.

Vice President Latheef made the statement during the launch ceremony of the National Mosquito Control campaign, spanning the entire country. Following the ceremony held the Public Services Section of the Male' City Council, the Vice President joined in cleaning activities at the location.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Vice President Latheef noted the success in eliminating some mosquito-borne diseases in the Maldives but expressed concern about the potential resurgence of diseases like filariasis. He emphasised the importance of the collaborative campaign involving government institutions, civil society organisation, and the public.

Additionally, Vice President Latheef underscored the significance of maintaining hygiene to prevent mosquito-borne diseases and urged the public to participate in the ongoing mosquito control initiative on a daily basis, stressing the need for continuous efforts.

Meanwhile, Minister of Health Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, highlighted that eradicating diseases in the Maldives is a collective effort of the healthcare system and individuals. He emphasised the importance of sustaining efforts to eliminate mosquitoes and prevent the recurrence of dangerous diseases that have already been eradicated.

The National Mosquito Control campaign involves various government ministries and companies and aims to combat mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chickenpox, and Zika. Malaria and filariasis, previously eradicated in the Maldives, are also transmitted by mosquitoes.
