The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is assessing the damages that incurred following the heavy rainfall and flooding in Addu City and Fuvahmulah City.
In a statement, the NDMA stated that ongoing drainage efforts are in progress to address road flooding caused by persistent rain lasting approximately eight hours in Addu on December 27. The rainfall led to flooding in five islands in Addu, although the authority assured that no homes sustained significant damage necessitating evacuation.
Investigations are also underway to assess the extent of damage to houses, some of which experienced power outages due to the flooding. The authority clarified that while the roads were affected by the rains, no households incurred damage in Fuvahmulah. The authority also said that both islands have returned to normalcy following extensive drainage efforts.
Additionally, the NDMA highlighted the collaborative efforts of various entities, including local councils, island offices, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the Maldives Police Service (MPS), the Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC), the Road Development Corporation (RDC), and individuals. They participated in drainage efforts and the placement of sandbags to mitigate flooding in the islands of Addu.
