Parliament rejects changing seating arrangement based on party composition

The Parliament of the Maldives has rejected the motion to change the seating arrangement of its members based on political party compositions.

The General Purpose Committee proposed a change in the seating order of Parliament members and submitted its report in October 2020, three years ago. The arrangement of members from each party was intended to be determined by the parliamentary group of that party, according to the report.

In the recent vote, 42 out of 44 present members voted in favor of maintaining the existing order of members in Parliament, while only two parliamentarians supported the motion for a change.

Presently, members from Male' City occupy the front row, and members representing the atolls from Haa Alifu to Addu City are seated in ascending order based on their respective atolls.
