Maldives reiterates urgent need for global solidarity in addressing environmental challenges

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has underscored the pressing call for global solidarity in tackling environmental challenges on a universal scale. These sentiments were conveyed during his address at the Roundtable on the Future of Human Rights, Environment, and Climate—a pivotal component of the Human Rights 75 high-level event held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Focusing on the imperative of adapting economic models and mobilizing resources, the Vice President asserted that the realization of the right to life is imperiled by the far-reaching impacts of climate change. He noted that, at the heart of the climate crisis, lies a fundamentally humanitarian issue. Drawing attention to a significant challenge, he noted the widespread lack of awareness regarding the intricate link between environmental protection and human rights. In response, he stressed the necessity of disseminating accurate information to bridge this knowledge gap, highlighting that instigating policy changes is paramount to integrating human rights considerations into financial decisions.

In elaborating on the multifaceted approach required, the Vice President advocated for a harmonisation of economic and business models. This comprehensive strategy, he explained, should encompass structural adjustments, cultural shifts, and international cooperation. Recognizing the evolving mindset in contemporary business endeavors, he highlighted the adoption of more environmentally friendly methods as indicative of changing perspectives. The Vice President placed particular emphasis on the significance of structural modifications, encompassing adjustments to legislative frameworks and procedures. He asserted that the Maldives, acknowledging every citizen's right to a healthy and ecologically balanced environment, encourages robust climate action through the imperative of multilateral cooperation. Moreover, he underscored the need to standardize ecologically sound practices on a global scale.

The roundtable is one of four high-level roundtables organized by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights during the high-level event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
