President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has returned to the Maldives following his official visits to the Republic of Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The visit to Türkiye, extended at the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was marked by official talks aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. Discussions covered diverse areas, including trade, investment, renewable energy, and higher education. President Dr. Muizzu also engaged with key officials of Türkiye, including the Vice President and the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly.
Subsequently, President Dr. Muizzu participated in the Twenty-Eighth Session of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai, UAE. During high-level deliberations, the president addressed global leaders on climate change, underscoring the Maldives' expectations for COP28. He emphasised the imperative for the Global Stocktake to align with the Paris Agreement's trajectory towards a 1.5-degree goal.
In a significant commitment, President Dr. Muizzu pledged the Maldivian government's dedication to developing renewable energy systems, aiming to meet 33% of the nation's electrical needs within the next five years. Additionally, a national initiative was announced to plant five million trees across the Maldives.
Accompanying the President on these diplomatic missions were First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and high-level Maldivian delegations comprising senior government officials. The visits mark a pivotal moment in furthering diplomatic ties and addressing crucial global challenges.
