Adam Azim secures MDP ticket for Male’ mayoral by-election

Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Adam Azim has officially secured the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s ticket for the upcoming Male' City mayoral by-election.

MDP held a primary election for the vacant mayoral seat, as well as three other constituencies, but Azim obtained his ticket after running unopposed. In addition, Ahmed Rishwan Rasheed, Hawwa Nihla, and Ahmed Imran secured seats in the Central Henveiru, South Henveiru, and South Machangolhi constituencies, respectively.

The position of Male’ City mayor became vacant after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned to assume office in November. Simultaneously, the three other council seats became vacant as councilors resigned to take on roles in the new administration. Notable candidates expressing their intention to participate in the Male' mayoral by-election include the incumbent City Councilor Mohamed Saif Fathih, Former Attorney General (AG) Azima Shukoor, and former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed.

The mayoral election will be held on January 13. The Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and the People's National Congress (PNC) coalition have also invited interested members to submit their candidacies for its primary election on December 9.
