First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has officially inaugurated the World Children’s Day Art Exhibition.
The event was organised by UNICEF Maldives, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Maldives Police Service (MPS), and local non-governmental organisation (NGO) Advocating the Rights of Children (ARC). The opening ceremony was held at the Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE).
The art exhibition titled The Island We Want, was opened to all schools nationwide and featured over 380 drawings from children across the Maldives. World Children’s Day is celebrated annually on November 20 and aims to raise awareness and expedite progress towards realising children’s rights. The day also commemorates the adoption of the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1989, which outlines the fundamental rights of every child.
At the event, First Lady Sajidha also launched a child-friendly book by UNICEF and ARC on the UN CRC in commemoration of its 34th anniversary. In addition, the top 15 paintings from the exhibition were announced. The First Lady also took the opportunity to view the showcased paintings following the inauguration.
