The Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure has halted the process of allocating flats under the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme in accordance with the instructions of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The ministry faced public outrage when it initially published the final list of the flat recipients without opening it for complaints. The ministry stated that it had formulated the list after thoroughly evaluating the applications but had relented to opening the list for complaints. At the time, the ACC had also instructed the ministry to halt its work related to the flats. More than 7,000 individuals submitted complaints to the ministry regarding the list.
The ministry recently published a new list of flat recipients after reevaluating the complaints. With the changes to the list, the three-bedroom flats will be given in the first round to those who have scored 76 and above. The remaining flats will be allocated through a lucky draw among applicants who scored 75. In addition, the two-bedroom flats will be given to those who have scored 73 and above. If a married couple have been selected, they will co-own the flat or the flat will be given to the designated person.
The ministry began the process of allocating the 4,000 flats in Hulhumale' through a lucky draw on October 15 and the ACC issued its second request to halt the activities during the lucky draw process. In a subsequent press release, the ministry stated that the allocation of flats has been suspended in accordance with the ACC.
