President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Ali Nashath as a member of the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM). President Solih presented the letter of appointment to Nashath at a ceremony held at the President’s Office.
Nashath was appointed under Articles 167(a) and 168(b) of the Maldivian Constitution and in conjunction with the stipulations outlined in section 4(a) of the Elections Commission Act. Prior to awarding the letter of appointment, Supreme Court Judge Dr. Azmiralda Zahir administered the oath of office to Nashath in the presence of President Solih.
The appointment was made after the Parliament of the Maldives approved Nashath to serve another term at the ECM with 42 members voting in favor and nine members voting against him. His initial term expired on July 25, 2022 and President Solih sent a letter to the Parliament on May 29 seeking approval to appoint him for another term.
Nashath's extended term will run until July 25, 2028. ECM presently comprises five members, each serving a five-year term.
