Nasheed vows to continue to fight for democracy

Parliamentarian Mohamed Nasheed has stated that he will continue to fight and protect the country's democracy. He made the remark in a press conference held to announce his resignation as Speaker of the Parliament.

At the press conference, Nasheed, who is also a former president, said that he will not be silent when democracy is being attacked and that the public knows of his service to the country beyond his tenure as speaker. He also criticised the manner the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had tried to oust him. He highlighted that MDP had re-submitted the no-confidence motion after withdrawing it on its own volition.

Additionally, Nasheed responded to questions regarding his political record, which include resigning as president, resigning from MDP, and now resigning as speaker. He said that each resignation letter will be consistent in their meaning and that he has always looked after the interests of the country and the people he serves.

Furthermore, when asked why he did not resign earlier over the no-confidence motion and whether he was responsible for the stalemate in the Parliament, Nasheed said that the Parliament was the most productive during his tenure. He added that challenging a no-confidence motion against the speaker is not an issue.
